Till now, we have heard that coronavirus can enter into the body via nose or mouth when somebody comes in contact with an infected person. That’s why we are advised to wear masks and gloves. But is that enough to stay protected?
Covid-19 Can Enter Through Eyes
It may infect you by entering through the eyes. A virologist after getting infected even after wearing masks and gloves raised this concern among the other virologists.
Well, they are not sure how true it is. But a researcher from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine says that if a common cold virus can infect the eyes there is a possibility that SARS-CoV-2 can also infect the eyes.
To figure out whether eye cells have ACE2 receptor or not the researchers conducted a study. They took surgical samples of few non-infected patients. Post-mortem eyes were also part of their study.
ACE2 receptor is a key receptor for coronavirus. If the cell has these receptors then it can easily enter into the body. What they found in the study was shocking.
The receptor was present in the eye’s surface cells. Furthermore, they have an enzyme called TMPRSS2 which aids the virus in entering the body. However, this is not an accurate finding so more research is needed. But many still believe that the virus can enter via eyes.
Not only this, but researchers are also worried that it could transmit through tears. It is because the specimens containing tears had shown the presence of the virus.
So, it is likely if someone touches their eyes or tears and then touch any surface then transmission could occur.
A New Symptom Could Be Pink Eye
Fever, dry cough, and tiredness are common symptoms of coronavirus. Besides this, there are less common symptoms as well as sore throat, headache, and conjunctivitis. However, pink eye is very rare but experts recommend that one should get tested for COVID-19 if they see the following symptoms- redness, discharge, and itching in eyes.
Furthermore, pink eye can also spread so do not touch eyes again and again. Also, avoid touching the surfaces or anyone after touching the discharge from the eyes.
Whether it is true or not that coronavirus can enter via eyes, it is highly important to take good care of your eyes.
How To Take Care For Your Eyes?
Although sunglasses or lenses do not completely protect your eyes from the virus. They may provide you with some protection at least.
If you have a habit of touching your eyes often then break this habit. The less you touch your eyes, less is the risk of infection. But if you find it hard to avoid rubbing or touching the eyes, use a tissue paper instead.
Furthermore, dry eyes will cause you to touch it again and again so use moisturizing drops. In case, you could not stop yourself from rubbing or touching then wash your hands first.
Avoid Using Contact Lenses
Glasses are a better option than contact lenses for wearers. It is because those who wear contact lenses tend to touch their eye often. Therefore, glasses are the best substitute.
There are very less finding on the COVID-19 entering through eyes because the virus is new of its kind and highly contagious.
Therefore, do not go out without masks and gloves. Keep a hand sanitizer with you and avoid touching any surface.
